Former MP Cheikh Oumar Sy has urged Amadou Ba to leave the Alliance for the Republic (Apr) and go it alone for the rest of his political career. This call comes after the former candidate’s first experience of the last presidential election, which came to nothing with a poor showing against the current regime.

Former MP Cheikhou Oumar Sy has called on former Prime Minister Amadou Ba to leave the Alliance for the Republic (Apr). Sy made this appeal to the former candidate in the March 2024 presidential election on Radio Senegal International’s (Rsi) “En Vérité” program, hosted by Migui Maram Ndiaye. For Mr. Sy, the former PM “must imperatively leave Macky Sall’s Alliance for the Republic (Apr) if he hopes to have a viable political future”.

“Today, Amadou Ba must leave the ranks of Macky Sall’s Apr and create his own party. This is the best course of action for him, otherwise he risks failing miserably in the next elections. He must avoid leaving under the banner of the Alliance for the Republic », declared Cheikh Oumar Sy.

Remaining true to his roots, the former deputy says that Amadou Ba needs political autonomy to stand out and win over the electorate, away, in his view, from the overwhelming influence of Macky Sall.  Cheikhou Oumar Sy sees a brighter future for the former Prime Minister, and sees him as a possible winner if he were to run with an independent list. “I’m confident that if there are elections and Amadou Ba creates his list alongside Macky Sall, Amadou Ba will triumph over him,” he conceded.

Criticizing Macky Sall’s attitude towards Amadou Ba, the former MP acknowledged that the former presidential candidate did not receive the necessary support from his allies, led by Macky Sall. According to Sy, this lack of support was a determining factor in Ba’s failure to win the last presidential election. Cheikhou Oumar Sy noted Amadou Ba’s intentions to assert himself as leader of the opposition. “Amadou Ba promises to fully assume his status as leader of the opposition”, he believes. Sponsored by President Macky Sall, Amadou Ba came second to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the March 24 presidential election.
