There is consensus on the date on which the presidential election will be held. The date is 2 June 2024. President Macky Sall will continue to lead Senegal until the election of the next President of the Republic. This is the proposal that came out of the national dialogue.

June 2024! That’s the date on which the presidential election is due to be held! At least, that’s what came out of the national dialogue. Will the President of the Republic validate this date or will he leave it to the Constitutional Council to decide? In any case, this new date is in line with the forecasts made by President Macky Sall. At the opening ceremony of the dialogue on Monday, he called for a date to be chosen before the start of the rainy season. This is what seems to have been done.

It should also be added that a consensus has been reached on the resumption or continuation of the electoral process. The dialogue proposes to continue the electoral process that has already begun. As a result, the 19 candidates selected by the Constitutional Council will be seeking the votes of the Senegalese people. Reminder: 17 of the 19 candidates selected did not take part in the dialogue. Only Amadou Ba and Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne accepted Macky Sall’s invitation. The other candidates, with the exception of Idrissa Seck, have appealed to the Constitutional Council to choose a date. Pending the response of the 7 « Wise Men », the outgoing President is expected to lead the country until 2 June.

This proposed date, subject to approval by the relevant authority, will coincide with preparations for Tabaski. Which is expected around 15 June. If there is a second round, it is likely to coincide with Tabaski. But apart from this coincidence with Tabaski, is a presidential election organised on 2 June in line with the decision of the Constitutional Council? The Council had stated that the election should be held « as soon as possible », while pointing out that the term of office of the Head of State will expire on 2 April. If President Macky Sall is to successfully complete this electoral process, it goes without saying that he will extend his term of office. What will the Constitutional Council say? That’s the question on everyone’s lips.
